Wnt signaling on bone cells. Osteoblasts derived from pluripotent mesenchymal stem cells. Wnt/β-catenin signaling is required for commitment of these cells to the osteoblast lineage, and Wnt signaling is essential for osteoblast precursor proliferation and differentiation. In addition, Wnt/β-catenin signaling has been implicated in the down-regulation of apoptosis of some osteoblasts. Moreover, Wnt/β-catenin signaling is required for osteoblast and osteocyte expression of anti-osteoclastic factors such as osteoprotegerin, the decoy receptor for RANKL [15]
