Assessment of iliac artery calcification and abdominal aorta. Regions of interest are placed around all lesions found within bilateral common iliac arteries (A). The maximum thickness of common iliac artery calcification is measured perpendicular to the vessel wall. The threshold for a calcific lesion is set at a computed tomographic density of 130 Hounsfield units within an area of ≥ 1 mm2. The aortic calcification index (ACI) is obtained, as previous reported. Briefly, the cross-section of each of 10 slices of the abdominal aorta is divided into 12 sectors (B). The number of sectors showing calcification in each slice is counted. ACI is calculated using the following formula: ACI = ([total calcification score on 10 slices]/[12 × 10]) × 100%
